UselessFiles is a ransomware that was first discovered on May 1, 2018. Initial reports suggest that it’s distributed via Backdoor Trojans and unpatched versions of Flash and Java. The threat attacks documents, images, music, videos, and databases and makes them impossible to use as normal. It can also attack servers and data storage services that aren’t protected the way they should be. An AES encryption algorithm is employed by this virus and it may put the following files in the following directories on the local disks – C:\WINDOWS\UselessFiles\B.bmp, C:\WINDOWS\UselessFiles\R.exe, C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\42C7766P.bat, and C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\UselessFiles.exe.
The first one is the image that replaces the Desktop Wallpaper as soon as all of the targeted data is encrypted. The second and third are used to initiate the encryption process itself, and the fourth one is responsible for showing the ransom note to you. The following message can be found inside of it –

There’s currently no decryption tool available for UselessFiles, but it still doesn’t mean you need to sponsor the people behind it with your money. Invest them into a program like Plumbytes instead and use it to eliminate this ransomware from the system, referring to a manual provided under the article in case you need any help. Recover your files from backup after that and make sure to keep your security software up-to-date and running all the time going forward. Doing that and also avoiding unnecessary risks while surfing the Internet should be enough to keep your computer protected.
